Last week Very Own Studio made our annual pilgrimage to D&AD New Blood at Old Spitalfields Market and New Designers 2015 at the Business Design Centre. Billed as ‘tomorrow’s creative superstars’ and ‘the most important UK event for emerging design’, attendance at both events is a must.
With both exhibitions displaying well over 3,000 talented graduates from British design courses, covering everything from visual communications to contemporary crafts to textiles and fashion, both venues were buzzing and a little overwhelming.
After a full day we were suffering exhibition fatigue with arms aching under the weight of a few trees worth of brochures and cards. (Take note 2016 graduates – carrier bags make excellent and very practical give aways!)
It was interesting to see all the graphic design graduates exhibiting together, seeing the thrust of the different courses; some industry oriented, others more artistic and blurring the lines between illustration and graphic design. Sometimes it was hard to separate students from the same course displaying the same projects alongside each other, which might be a point to bear in mind for next year.
We came away from the day with a lot of work to look through and found it fascinating to see that some graduates have emerged as fully formed designers, whilst others will need to acclimatise their ability to the industry. It was inspirational to see so much fresh talent.
Congratulations to all the graduates and good luck from Very Own Studio!
