Celebrating five years in the graphic design business.
On this day five years ago I sat in my accountant’s office as they registered Very Own Studio. The last five years have flown past and have seen lots of changes. The business started in Manchester, but moved down to Brighton in 2010. The economy has picked up considerably since then and technology offers new ways to communicate and interact. But at the heart of it, design is still design, as Saul Bass puts it, thinking made visual.
Over the last five years I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with some lovely people: clients, suppliers, collaborators and peers. We’ve also worked with a wide range of businesses and organisations, from multinationals to innovative start ups.
What has this involved? Many things: naming several businesses, branding for regional development, helping research organisations visualise data on hunger and equality, working with international football federations on their communications, to name just a few. The variety is what keeps the job interesting — learning about different sectors, and seeing how different businesses and individuals approach the visual world.
The result has been that we’ve built expertise in helping brands understand themselves: what makes them different, what their visual story is, and how they can communicate this to the world.
We’ve also worked hard to develop this understanding of our own business too; defining Very Own Studio and developing principles that underpin what we do (more of this in another post).
So it just leaves me to say thank you to everyone involved over the last five years. Here’s to the next five!
All the best.
